Looking back at Premier League history, we recall Alan Shearer's volley as Newcastle beat Everton

Alan Shearer struck a magnificent volley as Newcastle United scored two late goals to win 2-1 and end Everton’s run of six consecutive victories.
The Toffees had seemed certain to replace rivals Liverpool in second place in the Barclays Premier League table after an early goal from Kevin Campbell, but, after the sending-off of Joseph Yobo, it was not to be their day.
Campbell’s goal came in the 16th minute after Everton had survived some early Newcastle pressure. David Unsworth played a long through-ball and Campbell chested it down before firing past Shay Given to maintain his record of scoring in each of his last five matches at St James’ Park.
Five minutes later the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Yobo was dismissed for fouling Bellamy. Richard Wright brilliantly repelled a Shearer header before the break and in the second half saved from Nolberto Solano as the hosts continued to pile on the pressure.
Everton looked to have weathered the storm when, in the 84th minute, Shearer hammered a superb volley into the net from just outside the area for his ninth Barclays Premier League goal of the season.
Bellamy, who had been sent off in Newcastle’s Champions League defeat by Inter Milan three days earlier, won the match when his shot from an acute angle deflected into the net off Everton midfielder Li Tie.
The result dropped Everton down two places to fifth, four points and a place above the Magpies, who climbed a spot from seventh.
Shearer’s goal was the key to the success and he said: “That goal will be up there in my top three.”
His manager Sir Bobby Robson added: “I don’t think Alan will ever hit a better shot than that.”
Everton manager David Moyes called it a “wonder goal. "I don’t think there is a team in this division who wouldn’t have Alan Shearer at centre-forward,” he said.
Newcastle finished the season third behind champions Manchester United and Arsenal. The result at St James’ Park ultimately proved costly for Everton, who missed out on a UEFA Europa League spot by a point when they finished seventh.
